Conversations beyond the table
Written by Sara Hope
It’s been a rich mix of conversations and food this last week, and I’ve loved every minute! ❤️🍴
There’s something very special about having the opportunity to sit around a table and talk over a meal, whether it’s with family, friends, or people you’ve never met. And I’ve been privileged to experience all three as Tom Hope, and I celebrated our recent silver wedding anniversary🎊
Connecting and chatting over food has always played a big part in my life, and those of you who know me well will know about my little ritual of lighting a candle at the kitchen table each evening. It marks my moment to pause and reflect on the day, to enjoy the process of cooking, and most importantly, to talk with whoever happens to be at home.
Many of the conversations we’ve been able to have at mealtimes this week will stay with me. Conversations across generations, sharing memories, laughing, and remembering those who sadly weren’t able to join us. Conversations with strangers, learning about different cultures, beliefs, and practices. And serendipitous conversations that opened up unexpected opportunities (like meeting Michael, a shop owner in Marrakesh who recommended three outstanding restaurants!!)
It’s also why Emily Cosgrove and I were keen to reach out to experts when writing our book, to better understand the diversity of experiences that impact our ongoing development of Conversational Wisdom. We were delighted to include a case study from Anne Fishel (Associate Professor of Psychology, Harvard Medical School), about the importance of family dinners and the associated benefits to the bodies, brains, and mental health of children and adolescents.
You can read more in the link here.
Often in our time-pressured days, mealtimes get squeezed, and we’re moving on to the next thing. But Anne’s insights provide a wonderful picture of the opportunity that we all have to connect together over food.
I will certainly treasure the memories of my chats this week 😊
