A City Square, A Quiet Mind.
A personal story from Sara Hope
In 2019, I wandered through the streets of London on a Street Wisdom Walkshop. My guided walkshop was led by David Pearl and we were invited to come with a knotty question.
Mine was how do I manage to balance running The Conversation Space and living in Devon? I thrive on the buzz of working in the city AND I love living near the moors and the sea. Can I do both?
It was a very memorable experience. I wandered the streets, curious about whether to turn left or right, go forwards, or backwards. Nothing was emerging. No answers to my question. My ‘hurry up’ driver was beginning to kick in and I started to feel frustrated.
Until, after about 30 minutes, I found a quiet square, a tree, a fountain. A moment of stillness surrounded by skyscrapers. And then the name: I couldn’t believe it but I found myself in Devonshire Square!
The answer was there all along. I didn’t need to choose.
So today, I happened to be working in the City, and made a return visit to Devonshire Square. Standing there again, I was reminded of that moment of clarity. The tension between business and rural life was never a choice – it was an integration.
Often, the answers we’re searching for are already within us – we just need to slow down enough to see them.
Thank you David for creating the space for such an inspirational experience! It’s stuck with me.
